What Big Eyes You Have
This weekend’s adventure was supposed to be an amazing couloir in the Eagles Nest Wilderness called What Big Eyes You Have, aptly named since it is an ambitious project. The couloir itself doesn’t look that bad- 1900’, relatively small snow climb- but the approach is long at ~7 miles. Andy V. and I found this out saturday night as we tried to make this approach in the dark, in a pouring rain. We had to park about 1.7 miles from our intended starting point due to deep snow on the road, along with downed trees. We only got about 3.5 miles from the car when we decided to dig out a spot on a hillside and camp for the night. We were soaked, the sled was rolling down the hill behind us, and the trail was getting harder to find. In the morning there was another 3” of wet snow and our gear was still soaked, so we decided to head home. This will get skiied this season, but we might wait till the road is a little more passable.
